Overview of the course
This qualification is designed for candidates seeking a specialised qualification to enhance their existing contribution in the workplace. The overall aim of the course is to prepare candidates for a career in animal care or Veterinary Nursing, based within a Veterinary practice.

Entry requirements
There is no minimum academic entry requirement for this course but each candidate must be in either:

  • Full-time (35 hours or more per week) employment in a Veterinary Practice (not necessarily and RCVS Training Practice).
    Candidates must be enrolled for 9 months prior to the date of examination.
  • Or Part-time (20 hours or more per week) employment in a Veterinary Practice (not necessarily an RCVS Training Practice).
    Candidates must be enrolled for 18 months prior to the date of the examination.
  • Candidates should be working in ALL areas of the practice (reception, consulting rooms, operating theatre, recovery/hospitalisation and treatment wards) in order to gain the necessary work experience. They should be dealing with a majority of small animals if employed in a mixed practice.

Progression
Students who successfully complete the course may progress to SVN Level II if employed in a suitable RCVS Training Practice. Students will also require qualifications in Mathematics and English either at GCSE above C or level 2 key skills equivalent.

Overview of the course
These programmes train the student Veterinary Nurse on a part-time basis whilst employed in an RCVS approved training practice (T.P).

The Veterinary Nurse becomes skilled in undertaking a range of diagnostic tests, medical treatments and minor surgical procedures under veterinary direction. During training and when qualified the veterinary nurse plays a significant role in the education of owners about maintaining the health of their pets.

Entry requirements
Students must be 16 years or older to commence training and must have achieved a minimum level of education qualifications either 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above or 5 Scottish grades 1 to 3. These passes must include English Language and 2 Science subjects (or 1 science plus 1 mathematics).

Alternative qualifications of a comparable or higher standard may be accepted at the discretion of the RCVS. Students must be enrolled as a student Veterinary Nurse with the RCVS prior to enrolling at Myerscough Lynwood.

Progression
RCVS Certificate Equine Veterinary Nursing Certificate, Foundation Degree Veterinary Nursing, BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing Top Up Degrees.

City & Guilds A1 Assessor Awards

Courses are offered to veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses (who hold at least 1 year post qualifying experience) to gain their assessors award. Training will take place both at the school and in the training practice for candidates who are looking to support their trainee veterinary nurses gain their RCVS NVQ Veterinary Nursing award.
